Commissioned Artwork for Arts and Culture Programme, Azim Premji University
This artwork portrays the story of The Hargila Army from Assam, India.
Once considered a bad omen by people because of their looks, and droppings, Hargila, the greater adjutant stork of Assam became an endangered bird, indirectly affecting the local ecosystem and the trees they nested on.
Purnima Devi formed The Hargila Army with local women and educated people.
They revived the bird with the help of textiles and transformed
the symbol of a bad omen into a celebrated motif,
transforming their hunters to their protectors.
This artwork took a lot of study into textiles,
and the nuanced tapestry of nature, and society.
